EASTLAKE, Ohio --
There is little more than rubble left of an Eastlake house after an explosion Wednesday night.
The explosion took place at a house located at 37845 Lakeshore Boulevard, near the Willoughby border, around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Frank and Alice Pitchler were transported to MetroHealth Medical Center by medical helicopter after the blast. They are both listed in critical condition.
Frank Pitchler suffered burns to multiple areas of his body and his wife, Alice, had multiple muscoskeletal injuries and lacerations.
Many viewers reported feeling the explosion in surrounding cities and thought it was an earthquake.
Fire departments that responded include Eastlake, Willoughby, Willoughby Hills, Willowick, Wickliffe, Kirtland Hills, Mayfield Heights and Mentor.
NewsChannel5's John Kosich said the husband-and-wife team are in their 80s.
Neighbors said that after the explosion, the man was found sitting in a recliner, calling for help, and his wife was lying on the floor.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation by a joint team of investigators from local fire departments and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
