Off-Duty District of Columbia Firefighter Shot Dead

WASHINGTON --

D.C. police are asking the public's help finding the gunman who fatally shot an off-duty firefighter Friday night.

Police said they responded to a report of a shooting about 9 p.m. in the 3500 block of Jay Street in Northeast Washington. When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

The victim, Michael G. Holmone Jr. 25, of Northeast, was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital, police said. Fellow firefighters rushed to the hospital after hearing the news.

Holmone was visiting his father, who lives on Jay Street, when he was shot, police said.

The married father of two had been a firefighter for six years and worked at the Pennsylvania Avenue station in Southeast D.C.. He leaves behind his wife and two sons, ages 2 and 3.
