Rio Rancho firefighters are investigating an apparent arson, Action 7 News reported.
At about 4 a.m. Sunday, fire crews responded to a call at a Chevron gas station at the corner of New Mexico Route 528 and Coralles Road.
When crews arrived, the found small flames coming from the area where tankers deposit gasoline.
The flames could have caused a major explosion, authorities said.
Once the flames died out, investigators thought the blaze was suspicious.
Route 528 was shut down briefly Saturday during the incident.
