Two girls in Brevard County, Fla., are accused of skipping school and sparking a 20-acre brush fire that burned dangerously close to home, according to police.
Firefighters in Scottsmoor, Fla., said flames came within feet of homes before the blaze was brought under control Friday.
Some homeowners said they saw two teen girls run after apparently tossing lighted cigarettes into the brush, Local 6 News reported.
"All I saw was two girls down at the end of the street, and they were going down that way," witness Doug Hensley said. "Somebody else told me that they saw these two girls leaving out of the park. That is stupid."
No damages or injuries were reported, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue.
"We're running into a very dry spell here, and people need to be careful -- and people have been. This is the first fire we've had in a while, and I'm glad for that," Ron Wise, of the Division of Forestry, said.
The fire was being fanned by winds of 25 mph from the north, and firefighters had to plow lines around the blaze in order to prevent it from spreading.
No evacuations were reported.
Both girls were charged with intentionally burning of lands.
