Fire forced residents of a Manchester apartment building for seniors to evacuate Monday morning.
Flames broke out at the Hugh Gallen Elderly High-Rise Apartments on Hanover Street early in the morning. Firefighters said that the fire started in a mattress and that improper disposal of smoking materials was the cause.
A resident of the apartment where the fire started was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters said that in addition to being a smoker, the woman was also on oxygen, which could have made the fire much worse.
A sprinkler system helped prevent the fire from spreading, and officials said that they believe the fire only caused damage to the apartment where it started.
Some residents were afraid to leave their apartments, and they were given temporary shelter at a local church.
