Three other teenage boys also were killed in the crash involving a four-door car and a white SUV happened at about 5 p.m. on Oliver's Shop Road at the intersection of Crescent Run Road near La Plata.
Police said a car occupied by five teenagers was traveling north on Oliver's Shop Road when the driver, Jonathan Chapman, 16, of La Plata, lost control of the vehicle.
The car, a Mercury, crossed the centerline and skidded sideways into the path of a southbound Chevy Trailbazer, which struck the passenger side of the Mercury.
Chapman; Tavonne Alston, 16, of La Plata; and Dionnte Swinson, 15, of La Plata; who were all in the Mercury, died at the scene. The teens were driving home from basketball practice.
Markus Allen, 17, of La Plata, is still recovering at Prince George's Hospital Center. He has injuries that authorities said are not considered life-threatening.
The woman in the SUV, Pamela Stine, 38, of King George, Va., was flown to Suburban Hospital, where her injuries are said to be non-life-threatening. She was the sole occupant of the SUV.
The teenagers were all students at La Plata High School, and none of them was wearing a seatbelt. No classes are being held at La Plata High School Wednesday because of parent-teacher conferences.
The Mercury's speed and driver error are considered factors in the crash, police said. The speed limit on Oliver's Shop Road is 40 mph.
Police said they will continue their investigation. It will include interviews with witnesses and survivors and toxicology tests.
