FORT WASHINGTON, Md. --

Firefighters were called to the scene of a two-alarm fire at the Fort Washington Marina on Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out just after 2:30 a.m. inside the Proud Mary Restaurant in the 13600 block of King Charles Terrace in Fort Washington.

There are no reported injuries.

The owner of the restaurant said the building had been closed for the past few days for remodeling.

Officials said there were about 75 firefighters and emergency workers at the scene. They said the fire moved to the business' roof, which caused them difficulty in fighting the fire. They said the business did not have a sprinkler system, which also hampered their efforts.

Officials said foam insulation in the roof ignited and they had to remove shingles from the roof in order to fight the fire. Fire officials said the bulk of the fire was located in the restaurant and was knocked down in about an hour, however, pockets of fire continued to burn in the cathedral-peaked ceiling areas. Firefighters fought the fire for more than three hours.

Fire officials said the fire started because of an accidental electrical malfunction in the kitchen.

There were no injuries, and losses were estimated at $1.5 million.
