ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. --
Several fire companies responded to battle a three-alarm factory blaze Monday night in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. The scene was reported by authorities to be the Wheaton's Plastics Factory on the 600 block of Mill Street.
There were no reports of any injuries, but heavy flames shot from the building for several hours after the fire was first dispatched at about 6 p.m.
NBC 10's Byron Scott reported that smoke was still smoldering at 9 p.m., and some people in the area were without electric service.
NBC 10 has learned that the old chemical factory or warehouse was no longer in operation. There had been been talk about refurbishing the abandoned structure, but no concrete plans.
Firefighters remained at the scene putting out hot spots in the large building, and crews expected to be there for quite some time.
