Four people are dead after an overnight apartment fire.
The fire broke out near 22nd at K streets at the Colonial House Apartments. At about 3 a.m. Tuesday, several people lined the streets around the apartment building.
Residents, neighbors and relatives were outside waiting to see if everyone got out OK.
Paramedics worked for several minutes on two people who were pulled from the apartment building.
Several others suffered smoke inhalation along with cuts and bruises.
At least six people were transported to the hospital. Neighbors helped in getting people out of the building. Firefighters said that some residents had to be taken out of third-floor windows.
NewsWatch 7 was told that a woman jumped from a second-floor window.
"On the north side of the building, it was running up into the upper-floor apartments. The guys made (an) attack and people were trying to get out their windows, so it was rather chaotic," said assistant fire chief Mark Rohling. "The toughest part for firefighters is working that hard and then finding a victim, someone who has not made it out."
There is no word yet on the fire's cause.
A neighbor told NewsWatch 7 that a few months ago teenagers started a fire in the building's hallway that resulted in some damage. That neighbor said that the smoke he saw reminded him of that fire.
