A Westmoreland County boy had to be rescued after he managed to crawl 10 feet down an air duct on Thursday in Vandergrift.

Nathan "Jimmy" Laero, 2, was alone for a few moments in the apartment above his grandparents' Internet company after his mother went to take a shower.

The child removed a gate and dropped his toy squirt gun inside the duct, then decided to go feet-first after it, his mother said.

Laero's mother heard him crying and called 911.

The local volunteer fire department, which is located next door, was able to get the child out of his predicament.

"The ductwork had been placed in an old chimney, so we had to get through the wall, then through the chimney, then through the ductwork," Vandergrift Fire Chief Tom Schaeffer said.

After an hour of removing bricks and drywall, Laero came out unharmed.
