LAWRENCEVILLE --

Fire officials are investigating an early morning blaze that killed a man and destroyed his home in Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Tommy Rutledge says fire fighters were dispatched around 3 a.m. yesterday to the suburban Atlanta house, which was completely engulfed in flames when they arrived. Two residents -- a mother and son -- escaped the fire without injury.

The 70-year-old father was found dead by firefighters inside the home.

The single-story house had no working smoke detectors. One of the occupants discovered the fire after being awakened by a loud popping sound.

The names of the victim and the survivors were not immediately released.
