Fire Destroys Room at Kansas City Motel

April 15, 2007
This was the second fire in less than a week.

Fire destroyed a hotel room at the Days Inn at East 87th Street and Interstate 435 on Friday, and it was the second fire at the hotel in a less than a week.

Motel resident Garry Brown experienced both fires and was injured in the earlier one.

"I started smelling smoke, and then I looked outside and smoke was everywhere," Brown told KMBC.

The earlier fire damaged an electrical outlet and hurt his hand.

"I was already burned, and I was just burned (again), but I'm lucky -- it could have killed me," Brown said.

Firefighters said the hotel was like an oven because it is all brick.

"Fortunately no one was trapped and we have no victims," Battalion Chief Joe Vitale said.

Meanwhile, Brown said two fires is enough and he's planning on moving somewhere else soon.

KMBC's Jim Flink reported that the hotel has failed initial fire inspections for seven years in a row, the problems were quickly fixed, and none of the violations were severe.

Fire officials said that's normal.

Hotel managers did not return KMBC's call.

The fires this week remain under investigation.

The Days Inn is up for another inspection in July.
