Fort Worth has announced Rudolph Jackson Jr. as the city's new fire chief.
Jackson has served as interim chief for the past two months.
The 24-year veteran of the Fort Worth Fire Department is the city's 12th fire chief since the city went to a professional fire service in 1893. He succeeds Chief Charles Gaines, who died at his home in 2006.
"Chief Jackson is an experienced firefighter and a seasoned manager who has a proven track record," City Manager Charles Boswell said on Friday.
"He has worked in virtually every area of Fort Worth fire service and knows what it takes to continue the city's longstanding commitment to public safety. He understands the city's strategic goals and has the integrity, training and experience to take Fort Worth fire service to peak performance levels," Boswell said.
Jackson joined the Fort Worth Fire Department in 1982 and worked his way up the ranks, becoming fire captain in 1994 and battalion chief three years later. He served as chief training officer from 2002 to 2004, fire marshal until 2006 and then was promoted to deputy chief.
The city manager's appointment must be confirmed by City Council before it is official. Boswell will ask council to confirm Jackson's appointment at its March 20 meeting.
