Connecticut Firefighters Battle Poultry Farm Blaze

Firefighters from several towns battled a massive fire at an old poultry farm, NBC 30 reported.

The fire was at an abandoned building at Arbor Acres Farm, which belonged to poultry industry pioneer Henry Saglio.

Dozens of firefighters were called to the scene of the fire on Marlborough Road in Glastonbury at about 4:30 p.m Wednesday. With no hydrants nearby, teams had to use tankers to douce the flames, officials said.

Fire crews thought the flames were under control earlier in the evening, but fire officials said the fire flared up again at 10:30 p.m. Firefighters and the Department of Environmental Protection decided that the water runoff could be dangerous because of chemicals in the building and decided to let it burn to the ground, making sure it stayed contained, officials said.

Smoke from the fire billowed more than 1,000 feet into the air and memories were the only thing that remained for Marlborough resident Donald Snell.

Snell said he spent two decades working at the farm when it was a thriving poultry business.

The company shipped chickens around the world, and the building was the backbone of the operation.

Snell said he worked inside remodeling the building.

"So it's hard," Snell said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
