Firefighters rescued a woman from the roof of her burning Overland Park home early Thursday morning.

The woman called 911 at about 1:30 a.m. after awakening to a smoke alarm. The woman said she opened her bedroom door, saw smoke and flames and could not get to the stairs to escape.

She said she popped the screen from a bedroom window and crawled out onto the roof with her dog while she waited for emergency crews to arrive.

Firefighters believe a candle started the fire.
