ROME, Ga. --
A fire at a carpet plant in northwest Georgia destroyed hundreds of bales of plastic and kept firefighters busy for hours combatting the blaze.
Plumes of dark smoke from the fire, at Marglen Industries Incorporated in Rome, could be seen for miles.
The large bales of crushed, plastic soda bottles, which are used to make carpet, caught fire behind the plant around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters spent more than three hours battling the blaze.
A fire department spokesman said the heat in the center of the burning plastic probably reached as high as 1,500 degrees.
No injuries were reported, although several firefighters were forced out of duty by the dangers of heat exhaustion.
