A four-alarm fire scorched an apartment on the top story of a Redwood City apartment complex early Saturday morning, leaving nine units of the 24-unit Whipple Road complex uninhabitable due to water damage.

The two occupants of the unit where the fire began escaped unharmed as flames shot out the apartment's windows.

''They just barely got out,'' said Battalion Chief Steve Krause. ''They were both outside the apartment without clothes and possessions.''

A firefighter received burns to his ears from the heat, but no one else was injured. Firefighters received the call at 2:57 a.m. and controlled the fire by 3:15 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were some reports of an explosion, and firefighters saw glass in the driveway when they arrived, Krause said.
