A Pembroke Pines man died Tuesday when the white Corvette he was driving slammed into a bridge support at the South Post Road overpass between Griffin Road and Arvida Parkway on Interstate 75 in Weston.

John Allen Walton, 63, died on impact inside the crushed vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. FHP received the accident call about 10:50 a.m.

Flames billowed high above the overpass as the car burned, charring the bridge's concrete.

FHP troopers found the car smashed against the piling, with all but the back bumper and part of the its bottom burned.

Davie Fire-Rescue workers extinguished the blaze within five minutes. Battalion Chief Brian Nolte said.

As the car cooled, firefighters noticed the driver was still inside.

Witnesses told troopers the car was traveling in the southbound lanes and began drifting toward the median.

The car then ran off the road, slamming into the concrete pillar.

FHP is investigating what caused Walton to veer off the road, Lt. Bill Ferrell said.

Investigators identified Walton from his license tag and retrieved his photo from a police database that included his driver's license.

Troopers closed the southbound left lanes for about two hours, and cars slowed to a crawl as drivers stared at the death scene.
