Chicago, IL -- An apartment blaze killed an elderly South Side man and injured a firefighter Saturday.

An elderly man is dead after a fatal fire raged through his South Side home Saturday night. A firefighter was also injured in the blaze.

An autopsy determined 82-year-old John Dickey died from burns suffered in the fire at his apartment on West Marquette Road.

His death was ruled accidental. Originally police said the blaze may have been caused by him smoking in bed.

A next-door neighbor said the man had been left alone momentarily while his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter stepped out of their first-floor apartment.

The man suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, had poor vision and was also a smoker, according to the woman next door who asked not to be identified.

He could not provide a possible cause of the blaze and had no further information.
