BROOKLYN, New York (AP) -- A Brooklyn subway worker escaped uninjured early Saturday after an assailant attempted to set her token booth afire, police said. The suspect fled the scene and remained at large.
The incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. in the Sutter Avenue station on the L line in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, said police spokesman Officer Christopher Filippazzo. The man approached the booth and stuffed a cloth through the change slot in the front of the booth.
He then poured a liquid on the cloth and set it ablaze, Filippazzo said. The booth's automatic extinguisher system kicked in and immediately put the fire out as the man fled the station, the officer said.
The booth clerk, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where she was treated and released. The booth was not damaged, and the investigation was continuing, Filippazzo said.
