MILFORD, Maine (AP) -- An investigation is under way into a fire that killed two brothers at their trailer park home.
Robert and David Spencer, both in their late 50s, were killed just after 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Riverside Pines Trailer Park on Route 2.
When the Milford Fire Department arrived, flames were shooting out all the windows, said Chief Chris Matson said. The flames were extinguished within 10 minutes.
``The first crews here were able to enter and do an initial attack (of the fire) and a quick search when they arrived,'' Matson said. Both victims were already dead.
Jim Pond was awakened by a crashing sound early Sunday, and when he looked out his window he saw flames shooting out of the Spencer's home next door to his.
He called 911 and woke his fiancee, Denise Spencer, a niece of the two men. Both scrambled to get outside to alert the two men.
``We ran outside in our nightwear and pounded on the door, screaming for them,'' Denise Spencer said, standing outside the burned structure two hours after the fire.
Heavy smoke poured out of the back door when Pond and Denise Spencer ripped it open in an attempt to get inside the trailer while waiting for fire crews.
Pond pulled a sheep dog that was overcome by smoke from the building; the animal was later revived. Another dog, a pug that Denise Spencer had given her uncles, died in the fire.
Robert Spencer, who was a disabled veteran, moved into the trailer a year ago, and his brother, David Spencer, moved in about six months ago, Denise Spencer said.
Denise Spencer said the Spencer family is close-knit, and that her uncles moved in next door to be close to other relatives who live in the park.
