Lilburn, GA -- An early-morning blaze caused heavy damage in a Lilburn house Saturday, while a child playing with matches may have started a fire that destroyed a bedroom at a Lawrenceville home.

Firefighters were called to 4505 Riverside Drive in Lilburn at about 2 a.m., said Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Thomas Rutledge.

Flames were showing through the roof of the one-level, single-family wood frame house. The fire started in a bedroom and spread to the living room, Rutledge said.

All occupants managed to escape before firefighters arrived, and the flames were doused after several hours. The exact cause of that fire was unknown at press time, Rutledge said.

No injuries were reported, but the American Red Cross was helping to find shelter for the family.

In Lawrenceville, firefighters believe a child playing with matches sparked a fire at about 2:30 p.m. in an upstairs bedroom at 2225 Rhett Court.

Officials quickly knocked out the fire, which was contained to the back bedroom in the two-story house, Rutledge said.

The second floor sustained significant heat and smoke damage, and the bedroom was extensively damaged, he said.
