NEW YORK (AP) -- Twenty-eight firefighters and three residents suffered minor injuries when a three-alarm fire erupted in a 44-story Chinatown apartment building early Thursday, the fire department said.

The blaze began on the 37th floor of 20 Confucius Plaza just before 6 a.m. and may have been started by careless cooking, fire officials said.

Temperatures in the apartment reached 1,000 degrees, forcing firefighters to enter the apartment by breaking through the wall of an adjacent unit, the department said.

Nine of the injured firefighters suffered head or neck burns, the department said.
