UPLAND, Calif. (AP) -- A woman and her young son fell into a rushing, rain-swollen creek Monday, a day after an 11-year-old boy fell into the same creek and drowned, authorities said.
Rescuers suspended a search as darkness fell for the woman and boy, who were swept away by San Antonio Creek about 4 p.m., said Gary Wise, supervising dispatcher for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The boy, 12, fell into the creek while he was washing his hands, and his 35-year-old mother jumped in after him, according to witnesses.
On Sunday, an 11-year-old boy drowned in the creek after he was swept under by currents moving up to 25 mph, authorities said. The currents carried the body of Marcelo Bautista into the San Antonio Dam.
He and another boy were skipping back and forth over part of the creek when he fell. His father was able to grab him but the boy slipped from his hand, authorities said. The man and the second boy were able to pull themselves out of the frigid waters.
The creek, 45 miles northeast of Los Angeles, was swollen by the heavy rain that struck the region earlier this month and by runoff from melting mountain snow.
