Hundreds of terrified subway riders were trapped on four trains for nearly two hours yesterday after a transformer exploded and filled the tunnels with smoke.

April 8, 2005 -- Hundreds of terrified subway riders were trapped on four trains for nearly two hours yesterday after a transformer exploded and filled the tunnels with smoke, crippling the A, B, C and D lines for nearly four hours. The blaze at the power substation on St. Nicholas Avenue and West 141st Street started at 11:02 a.m. and knocked out power along the 600-volt third rail.
