YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) -- A fire that apparently was set in a chapel at St. Paul Cathedral destroyed many of the furnishings, and officials said an individual was being sought for questioning.
Damage was estimated at $80,000 in the fire, which destroyed an organ, altar, carpeting, furniture and several stained-glass windows in addition to causing smoke, heat and water damage elsewhere in the building Sunday.
The chapel building remained structurally sound, and there was no damage to the main part of the cathedral, which is linked to the chapel by a hallway, city fire Capt. Joe Riel said.
No one was in the chapel when the fire occurred about 1:50 p.m., near the end of a Mass, and no one was injured.
Four city fire investigators, one from nearby Selah and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were trying to determine the exact cause of the fire, but burn patterns indicated it may have been set intentionally, Riel said.
