Police in Long Island are trying to identify a woman killed in a fiery crash. The deadly collision between a car and a home heating oil truck happened around noon today in Uniondale, Long Island.
Eyewitness News reporter Stacey Sager has the story.
It happened in a matter of seconds. The resident who shot home video said the fire was so powerful, no one could have saved the woman trapped inside a car.
Chief Noel Thomas, Uniondale Fire Department: "The person is pretty much burned beyond recognition, still in the vehicle."
But the 75-year-old driver of the home heating oil truck which collided with the car, walked away from the crash, although visibly dazed and shaken.
Clayton Sprague, Heating Oil Truck Driver: "I was very upset."
Clayton Sprague insists it was an accident, that the woman driving the car somehow ended up on his side of the road.
Clayton Sprague: "I was going west, and she was coming east, and she started sliding, and she slid right across the road in front of me."
There are 2,800 gallons of home heating oil in the truck, but authorities say that didn't trigger the fire. Instead, they say it was mostly the impact of one engine colliding with the other.
Authorities spent the day cooling down the fuel in the truck, and trying to identify the driver, most likely through dental records.
Authorities temporarily removed 35 residents from their homes until the cleanup was complete.
