Two Edison fire department vehicles rushing to the scene of a crash were involved in separate accidents yesterday, including one in which a fire engine skidded across a front lawn and came to a stop within a few feet of a house.

"I walked out on my front porch and the truck was there, less than 2 feet away," said Mark Mazur, whose Woodbridge Avenue home was nearly hit by Edison Fire Department Engine No. 1.

Mazur said the engine knocked down a 30-year-old Japanese maple tree, clipped the downspout on the corner of the house and knocked down both hand rails on the front steps.
