Fire Lieutenant Elmer "Dino" Mahaffey continues to make progress in his recovery from injuries sustained on February 22, 2004. Four weeks since entering the hospital in critical condition "Dino" has progressed enough that he has been moved from the Intensive Care Burn Unit at The Washington Hospital Center to a step down intermediate room. He remains in serious condition and continues to have good days and positive progress in his recovery is being made. The ventilator that assisted his breathing has been removed and he now breathes through a tracheotomy tube. He continues to eat and drink regular food and soft drinks. "Dino" walked, with assistance, from his room and down a hallway to an exercise room. The grafts on his hands are healing and facial burns have all but cleared up.

Firefighters and Paramedics have made their way to the Washington Hospital Center Blood Donation Center since the families appeal last Wednesday. Dania Mahaffey today thanked firefighters, paramedics, friends, family and hospital staff in the Blood Donation Center as they lined up to make a donation. Donors today included Fire Chief Ron Blackwell, Firefighters/Paramedics Local 1619 President George Michaelides, Wade Mahaffey {Dino's brother}, and Spokesperson Mark Brady. While exact number of donor's were not available, hospital staff said that there has been a steady stream of donors since last Wednesday. If you wish to donate blood in the name of Dino Mahaffey, contact the Blood Donor Center at Washington Hospital Center by calling 202-877-5250 for an appointment, or simply go to the blood donor center.
