Stratford - A crane toppled from a barge into the water under the Sikorsky Memorial Bridge in Stratford today, killing one worker.

The accident happened around noon under the bridge, which is undergoing demolition and renovation.

It's not clear how the accident happened. According to wire reports, the Department of Transportation says the accident involved a contractor working on the bridge.

Co-workers pulled the victim from the water and were performing CPR when emergency crews arrived.

The victim died around 1:00 p.m. at Bridgeport Hospital. He has not been identified.

Booms were put in the water to control any spills in the water.

The southbound lanes of the Merritt Parkway were closed for a time, but all lanes are back open.

The bridge is undergoing a major renovation. Earlier this year the old bridge was closed and a new span was opened. The old bridge was then going to be demolished and another bridge built so there would be a new span for each direction of travel.
