Coal is burning underground in Sullivan County and officials want to make sure it doesn't spread to nearby homes.

Officials said Wednesday they will dig up the area near Mildred along Route 487 to get to the fire.

"Oh, it's really hot. We took some temperatures over there and it's well up of 500, 600 degrees, cherry red on the ground in some spots," said Mildred Fire Chief Ed Fitzgerald.

They think it started several weeks ago when someone was burning trash.
