DETROIT (AP) -- Three men whose bodies were removed from a burned-out home used for dog fights were shot before the fire was set, police said. One man was partially decapitated.

Firefighters responded to the burning home before dawn Wednesday and found the bodies in the basement. It appears the fire was set to cover up the killings, said Detroit Police Inspector Craig Schwartz.

Each man was shot once in the head, police said.

Michigan Humane Society workers found a dog treadmill on the first-floor of the duplex and the remains of a makeshift dog ring in the basement. Police and firefighters also said a pit bull terrier rescued from the home had wounds and scratches.
