ANDERSON, Ind. -- Anderson firefighters worked for nearly two hours battling a fire at the abandoned Philadelphia Quartz Corp. plant in the 1900 block of Columbus Avenue on Tuesday.

The fire broke out just after noon and was reportedly caused by workers cutting a conveyor belt inside the old factory that manufactured crystals for soap and cleaning products, Battalion Chief Sam Aleshire said. The factory is in the process of being demolished.

No one was injured during the incident.

Aleshire said there was no damage as the factory is being torn apart and the fire was limited to the conveyor belt. The firefighting process was hampered by the fact that it was inside an enclosed shaft, he said. Firefighters used a backhoe to pull the burning conveyor belt out making the process much easier.
