SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Fire broke out in the boiler room of a cargo ship at the Port of Savannah on Thursday, forcing firefighters to battle the blaze amid 1,000-degree heat in the ship's hold.
No one was injured in the blaze, and firefighters were able to extinguish it, said Battalion Chief Anthony Faust of the Savannah Fire Department.
The heat was so intense that steam wafted up from the water and paint began to crack on the sides of the Torm Africa, a West African cargo vessel carrying lumber and container goods. Firefighters used fans to pump cool air into the hold while tugboats sprayed water on the sides to cool the ship.
The ship was being moved to a new berth for repairs, said Robert Morris, spokesman for the Georgia Ports Authority.
