A Bronx street was renamed yesterday in honor of a firefighter whose voice is heard extensively on the audio tape of the Sept. 11 response recently released by the Port Authority.
Orio Palmer, a 20-year veteran and a chief with Battalion 7 in Manhattan, was killed in the World Trade Center's south tower on 9/11.
Family members and fellow firefighters held a small ceremony at noon to dedicate a portion of East 234th Street as "Deputy Chief Orio J. Palmer Way."
The renamed section stretches from Vireo to Webster avenues.
Palmer's voice can be heard on the 78-minute audiotape that is the only known recording of firefighters at the scene.
The tape, recently released by the Port Authority, was recovered from 5 World Trade Center, where radio transmissions were monitored.
In September, Mayor Bloomberg signed a bill renaming 81 streets after fallen firefighters and police officers.
