Jan. 10--INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne Township Fire Department responded to the report of an explosion on the westside of Indianapolis late Monday afternoon.
After arriving on the scene at Victor and West Washington streets, crews came upon a single story commercial building with heavy fire and smoke.
According to a general contractor who spoke with fire officials, the building was in the middle of a renovation to split it between a restaurant and a nail salon.
The building was empty at the time of the explosion, but debris was sent about 150 feet away from the scene. Wayne Township Fire officials also said that the shockwave from the blast could be felt for more than a mile away.
There were no injuries reported.
The building is considered a total loss and a pair of adjacent businesses received minor damage.
Wayne Township officials were aided by crews from Citizens Gas for the investigation. The cause of the incident is believed to be from a gas leak in the building that eventually led to the explosion. They have not yet been able to determine if the leak was in the piping or an actual open gas valve.
Some witnesses reported seeing a car leaving the area prior to the explosion. Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity is encouraged to call the Wayne Township Fire Department at 246-6216.
