NORMAN, Okla. -- Analysis needed after student's accidental death
In the aftermath of a student's death, the University of Oklahoma is teaming up with the Norman Fire Department to analyze and increase safety and security of campus fire escapes.
Casey Lauren Cooke, 22, was discovered unresponsive early Sunday morning by OU staff on patrol near Evans Hall. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
It is believed Cooke was attempting to climb down the fire escape from the roof of Evans Hall when she fell.
The state medical examiner ruled her death an accident and determined she had suffered fatal blunt force trauma to the chest and head.
A toxicology report is still pending.
"In light of the tragic death that occured on campus this past weekend, the university is, in consultation with the Norman Fire Department, conducting an analysis of its external fire escapes," Catherine Bishop, vice president of public affairs, said Wednesday. "The age and historic nature of many of our buildings, including Evans Hall, present complexities in fire safety implementation, and it is the university's hope that this analysis will provide additional options to advance safety interests."
On Wednesday, Norman Fire Chief James Fullingim confirmed the collaboration between the university and Norman Fire Department but declined to comment.
Cooke's funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 2717 W. Hefner Road in Oklahoma City.
In lieu of flowers, Cooke's family has requested that memorial donations be made to Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
