May 18--WATERLOO, Iowa -- Two boaters and their dog swam to safety after their boat capsized in the Cedar River Saturday afternoon.

The two -- a man and a woman -- had anchored the aluminum jon boat just downstream from Sans Souci Island shortly before 3 p.m. when it started to sink, according to officials with Waterloo Fire Rescue.

The boat had been anchored off the aft, and the river's current began to pull it under the surface, said Capt. Ryan Mahood. The man's foot became tangled in the anchor line, and he received a minor injury, officials said.

Other boaters in the area helped them into their craft. They called 911 and took them to meet firefighters at the boat ramp at Cedar River Park. Mahood said the man's injury didn't require hospitalization.

Other people in the area pulled out some of the flotsam items that were washed overboard and brought them ashore.

Fire crews then returned to the scene in fire department craft of the accident and recovered the submerged boat from the river.
