June 26--An elderly Jacksonville man was killed in a Tuesday night fire police say was intentionally set.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department initially responded to the fire in the Englewood area off Emerson Street about 11 p.m. to find the home engulfed in flames.
Firefighters pulled the man out of the house at 3604 Mimosa Drive and took him took to a nearby rescue vehicle, but he was pronounced deceased.
"During the call a witness said that they saw someone actually setting the fire," Sgt. T.K. Waters of the Sheriff's Office said.
Police helicopters roamed overhead well into Wednesday morning searching for the culprit while firefighters battled the blaze on the ground.
The assailant is described as a white male in his early 20s, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7 and about 120 pounds. He was wearing a green shirt, shorts and a black and white backpack. Anyone with information can call police at (904) 630-0500 or CrimeStoppers at (888) 277-8477(TIPS).
