July 25--A fire badly damaged three boats docked at the Oak Grove Marine Center in Edgewater on Thursday morning, spilling burning fuel into the South River as emergency responders sought to contain it, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
Firefighters from the county and Annapolis began responding to the marina in the 2800 block of Solomons Island Road about 4:40 a.m. for reports of flames and found three pleasure boats on fire, said Chief Keith Swindle, a department spokesman.
The boats ranged from 30-feet to 42-feet in length, he said.
It took 38 firefighters until 5:30 a.m. to bring the blaze under control, he said. Damage estimates were not immediately available.
No injuries were reported.
As of 8 a.m., firefighters remained on the scene monitoring fuel that continued to burn on the water's surface, as officials with the Maryland Department of the Environment worked to contain the environmental impact of the spill, Swindle said.
