ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Smoke from an Alexandria fire could be seen from Northeast, DC
on Monday.
The fire started at 801 Pickett Street at around Noon.
The fire call escalated to three alarms almost immediately.
It was upgraded to a 6-alarm fire shortly afterward.
Firefighters encountered a problem trying to fight the fire because of a water main break from earlier in the day that also happened on Pickett Street.
One firefighter was injured in this incident.
WUSA9's Bruce Johnson reports carpets and carpet pads are fueling the fire that's burning in the building.
Huge plumes of black smoke filled the air in Alexandria, early Monday afternoon.
