Roof Collapses During N.C. Blaze

Jan. 1, 2015
About 70 Charlotte firefighters battled the three-alarm fire at the commercial building.

No injuries were reported early Thursday in a three-alarm blaze that heavily damaged a southwest Charlotte business, fire officials said.

The fire was reported about 3 a.m. at Light Fixture Outlet, in the 4600 block of Nations Crossing Road, off Old Pineville Road north of Woodlawn Road.

Authorities said first-responding crews found flames and smoke coming from the building. Second and third alarms were sounded within the next 30 minutes, and it took a crew of 70 firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

At one point, officials said, part of the roof collapsed, and firefighters had to retreat temporarily. Some firefighters remained at the scene until daybreak, dealing with hot spots.

Officials said they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. There is no word as to the cause of the blaze, and investigators are working to determine the damage estimate.
