Long Beach firefighters rescued a woman and her 4-year-old daughter from an apartment fire early Thursday.
Crews found the two on a bed in the Stanley Avenue apartments shortly after midnight, KTLA.com reports.
The girl was taken to a Torrance burn unit and the mother transported to St. Mary Medical Center.
The fire was knocked down in 15 minutes.
“It’s critically essential that we make sure that everyone understands that smoke detectors do save lives,” Jake Heflin, Long Beach Fire Department paramedic spokesman Heflin said.
“Whether or not they play a role in this situation, it’s important that everyone clearly understands that (with) smoke detectors, you need to make sure the batteries are fully operational and functional.”
