CO Pumper Struck by Tractor-Trailer

Dec. 29, 2017
Four Southeast Weld firefighters were injured when the pumper making a turn was struck by a big rig.

Four firefighters were taken to a hospital, one with serious injuries, early Wednesday after their engine was struck by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 76 on the Eastern Plains.

The wreck happened just before 4 a.m. east of Kennesburg. The engine was heading east on I-76. It was making a turn onto an access road when the tractor-trailer, also in the eastbound lanes, collided with its passenger side, according to the State Patrol.

The entire crew of the Southeast Weld Fire Protection District firetruck, four people, was taken to Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton.

Southeast Weld Fire Protection District Chief Tom Beach told Denver7 one of the firefighters had to get stitches and suffered from broken bones. Another received stitches, he said, and the two others were hospitalized for evaluation.

“We would like to remind everyone to please give emergency vehicles space when they are responding with lights and sirens,” the Southeast Weld Fire Protection District said in a Facebook post. “This is not just for your safety but for ours as well. The crew that was on this engine are doing well.”

The State Patrol says the collision remains under investigation.
