MONTEREY COUNTY, CA, MAY 30, 2011 –The U.S. Forest Service, three air tankers, three helicopters, 10 engines, a dozer and several hand crews attacked a fire that involved 500 acres of grass and brush near homes outside San Ardo. First-arriving units found a downed power line had spread flames into the grass, with 30 acres of fire being pushed by strong winds. Before the afternoon was over, 500 acres were consumed and the incident commander reported the potential for 5,000 acres if the strong winds did not cease. By 6:45 P.M., the 50-mph winds did subside, letting firefighting resources corral the fire.
