LOS ANGELES, May 18, 2009 - Following a second evaluation of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), the County of Los Angeles Fire Department has awarded Sperian Respiratory Protection and its distributor, L.N. Curtis and Sons, the SCBA contract for the County of Los Angeles Fire Department, which includes products of the company.
It is estimated that with Los Angeles County, and other departments who might choose to purchase SCBAs off this contract, the contract will represent approximately 4,200 Sperian Warrior SCBAs and related items, including CBRN powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs), SABAs, Last Chance Filters, SCBA communications and other related SCBA products.
"We're thrilled to learn that, after a second testing and evaluation process from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and fire departments from surrounding cities, fire departments are finally able to purchase the SCBA they initially found in their 2008 evaluation to be the best - the Warrior SCBA," said Jeff Shipley, SCBA Product Manager for Sperian.
"I think it is important to point out that price was not a primary factor in being awarded the contract. L.A. County Fire Department felt its specifications were essential to the safety of its firefighters," said Shipley.
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department is the third largest fire department in the United States. It is recognized coast-to-coast for leadership and expertise in firefighting and firefighting equipment.
"This is a tremendous business accomplishment for the Sperian Respiratory orginization," said Steve Weinstein, Senior Product Manager for Sperian Respiratory Protection. "It reaffirms the firefighting community's confidence in the Warrior's safety, reliability, comfort and operation."
"With so many Los Angeles area departments jointly evaluating and simultaneously selecting the Warrior, it makes a statement to the nation about the importance of SCBA interoperability."
"The fire departments that make the decision to participate with the County of Los Angeles Fire Department are getting the SCBA they have wanted, needed and deserved for months," said Bill Sokol, a Sperian Vice President. "The Warrior is a new type of SCBA, built with a combination of proven technologies and new features suggested by firefighters themselves. This win validates our approach of incorporating firefighters into the design process of new Sperian products."
