TX FF Responded Alone to House Fire in Broken Engine

Feb. 1, 2024
When the Salineno firefighter returned in another engine, he said it didn't have enough water to do anything.

A single firefighter with an engine that didn't pump is not the response a Texas homeowner believed she'd get when her house caught fire recently.

"I even asked him, where was his uniform? Where was his equipment? He...didn't even respond...He just said that the pump wasn't working and, and I [asked] him, then what are you going to go do? Go get another truck," Sara Ramos said of the firefighter from Salineño Volunteer Fire Department.

The firefighter sans turnout gear went back to the scene in another truck but he reportedly told her it didn't have enough water. There was nothing he could do until firefighters from Roma and LaRosita arrived, according to KRGV.

The single mother of four told reporters she believed the fire was 'stoppable' when she called the fire department. Instead, she lost everything.

"We're a small department. There's not a whole lot going on, but things do happen. We are working on getting more personnel and volunteers to get them training so that we're there," Starr County Fire Marshal Antonio Moreno said.

The fire department has four certified firefighters and about two to three volunteers. At the time of the fire, they only had one firefighter on call.

Ramos is still seeing answers to her many questions.
