HUGHESTOWN -- The Hughestown Fire Department will be receiving a $1,500 donation from the borough.

Council voted 4-2 to make the donation, half of what it annually gives the department, at Mondays meeting. Councilmen Samuel Sanguedolce and Paul Murphy voted against the donation.

Sanguedolce said he didnt approve when the money could be used for equipment to keep the roads in good condition. He also said he wanted to see the financial books of the department, and that they should be available to the public.

Emergency Management Coordinator Carl Sarti said the department would probably need a written request to see the information, and he would look into the matter.

Fire Chief Jamie Merlino told council the $3,000 donation is important to the department.

In another matter, Sarti also told council about a Griffith Street parking problem.

Because of people visiting residents and parking on the street, Sarti said, the firetrucks and ambulances would not be able to get up the street if there was an emergency.

Solicitor Mark Singer said he would investigate and have an answer at the August meeting.

Also, President Jerome Chilipko said a $20,000 grant was received for a new dump truck. Council is waiting for a second grant for the same amount to be approved.
