IRS Files $45K Lien Against Former Pa. Fire Chief

June 2, 2015
The IRS is slapping former Wilkes-Barre Twp. Fire Chief John Yuknavich with the lien after he was jailed for stealing money from the fire department.

Jailed former Wilkes-Barre Township Fire Chief John Yuknavich will be getting some prison mail from the IRS.

The IRS on Monday filed a federal tax lien against Yuknavich for $45,100.

Yuknavich started serving a six month federal prison sentence on Feb. 10. He’s jailed at Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. The longtime fire chief pleaded guilty in federal court in September 2014 to one felony count of stealing from programs that receive federal funds.

Federal officials accused him of stealing about $45,000 from the fire department.

Prosecutors charged that he skimmed funds for his own personal use from monthly checks that Wilkes-Barre Township gave the fire department to cover its mortgage and expenses. Yuknavich, who had control of the fire department’s finances, deposited a portion of the funds in a bank and kept the rest for his personal use, prosecutors said.
