Stamford fire officials said an assistant fire chief was suspended earlier this month over safety violations at a house fire.
Assistant Chief Robert Morris fell through the floor at a North Stamford house at a Jan. 21 fire.
Fire Chief Trevor Roach said Morris' actions included "safety concerns" and told the Stamford Advocate. He wouldn't comment on the issues citing “personnel matters.”
The suspension ended on Feb. 3.
According to a personnel roster obtained by the newspaper, Morris the was highest-ranking chief at the scene.
Morris, who was the highest-ranking fire official at the blaze, was able to free himself and was uninjured.
Stamford has both career and volunteer firefighters. Morris took the job, which oversees the five volunteer fire companies, after retiring from FDNY where he was captain of Rescue 1.
“It’s a disaster from the beginning,” union President Brendan Keatley said about the organization of the department. “There is no one department, there is no one anything. There is no one set of procedures for career and volunteer firefighters alike.”
“Could someone ask what his job is?" Keatley said. "Is he an administrator or a fire suppression person. I think there has to be a distinction."
